00:34:51 Cheri Brenton: Hello everyone! Cheri Brenton, on the call from Middleton, WI. I am an HR Director at ARC Community Services, Inc. in Madison. So happy to be learning with all of you. https://www.linkedin.com/in/cheri-brenton
00:35:56 Lotus Buckner: I remember that, Zach! Yes!!!
00:36:38 Lotus Buckner: Iā€™d love to hear from the audience too if you have some good examples of allyship that youā€™ve seen.
00:37:00 Janine Dunn: Hi all, I am Janine Dunn, retired CHRO from a nonprofit in Eastern CT. I am active with our local SHRM chapter as co-president, and this topic is of great interest to me. Also nice to connect with some friends I haven’t seen in a while.
00:37:01 Howard Prager: My friend, Morag Barrett, has written a book on allies called Cultivate and sheā€™s coming out with a new book this year also about allies at work. https://www.amazon.com/Cultivate-Winning-Relationships-Morag-Barrett/dp/1936487292/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=allies+by+morag+barrett&qid=1611339455&sr=8-1
00:37:12 JOHN TINDALL: Hello friends, John Tindall here checking in from The Woodlands, TX. I am very interested in this topic, and actually seeking employment in non-profit dealing with racial/social/justice inequities. 20+ years of management experience, a strong desire to serve. If you have a referral for me, please drop it here: jttindall@gmail.com
00:38:02 Joan Speicher: HI All! My name is Joan Speicher and I am the Senior Director, Human Resources from the St. Louis, MO area. I am here to listen & learn. Happy to connect with you all.
00:38:16 Sandra Spencer: Hi Everyone,
00:38:21 Lauren Grosso: Hi Everyone! SHRM-CP in the NYC area, here (feel free to connect and network! https://www.linkedin.com/in/grossolauren/) I am currently self-employed but I miss HR and Iā€™m looking for a new position. A lot of my search is trying to find a company who understands the importance of DEI, after leaving one that didnā€™t care. While Iā€™m on the hunt, Iā€™m learning as much as I can so that I can carry it into my next role and my everyday life.
00:38:27 Cassandra Rose: I appreciate Alexis Ohanian ally ship with his wife and daughter by stepping down from Reddit.
00:38:54 Sandra Spencer: Glad this is being recorded. I work for an FQHC in CT as an HR Director so I am really interested and invited some friends as well.
00:39:24 Leah Ramsey: Iā€™ve likened ā€œAllyshipā€ as continuously using my whiteness and privilege to hold space for those who donā€™t have my witness and privilege and CONTINUOUSLY supporting and engaging BIPOC businesses, social justice movements, and leadership.
00:39:32 Eric Kung: Exactly, Zach. We need to break out of this false dichotomy of fighting for equality or striving for personal success
00:39:49 Howard Prager: This summer we did a lot of work in understanding what Allyship truly means and how we can be an ally
00:40:25 Sandra Spencer: I totally agree Zachary, thanks for sharing that perspective.
00:40:28 Abby Murray: I care and I do bother myself to listen. .Not all police actions are representative of ALL police
00:40:34 Lotus Buckner: Thatā€™s great Howard! Were there any learnings that stand out to you?
00:40:57 Turquoise Peart: Thatā€™s good Zach!
00:41:38 Howard Prager: Hi Lotus, an ally means more than saying I agree. Being actively supporting and standing up for whatā€™s right
00:42:01 Niels Dale: At the very least, when you see “it”, say something!
00:42:31 Anita D Crum: Hi Everyone! Glad to be here with you all today, I’m in NJ and glad to be here on this topic of Allyship. It is a resurgence for women in the workplace from the HR perspective. I am an HR Professional, – Consultant at Human Capital Future, LLC, Aligning Employee Aspirations + Company Goals = Future Growth. I’d love to connect, LinkedIn.com/in/anitadcrum
00:42:31 Lotus Buckner: I love that! ā€œIf you see something, say something!”
00:43:57 Leah Ramsey: AGREE – racism is 100% learned!
00:44:12 I Dominique “D” Ross, she/her: Yes! That desire to be uncomfortable has to be there.
00:44:15 Sarah Stephenson: Yes! My 6-year-old son and I have regular discussions about race.
00:44:23 Tina Longo: Being a good ally takes self-reflection and having a real understanding and gathering facts of how our marginal group are feeling or what they are experiencing. We can’t just say we are an ally! I think its also understanding the lens we see things through.
00:45:57 Lotus Buckner: Yes, embrace that we are going to mess up!
00:46:42 Leah Ramsey: Such a powerful analogy Zachary! – My spouse and I had a similar conversation the other day – heā€™s learning how to be a better ally of all womenā€¦it is certainly a process.
00:46:46 I Dominique “D” Ross, she/her: I have to be willing to ā€œfail forward.ā€
00:46:53 Howard Prager: On halloween when we handed candy out at a distance. One kid after we gave him candy said why do you only like black people and hate others because we have a Black Lives Matter sign in our window. Really? This was I donā€™t know a 7-8 year old kid. In our neighborhood. Saying this. I was stunned. If I could have taken his candy back I would have.
00:47:36 Yvette Mack-Tate: It is called Accountability. Acknowledge it, address it and move forward.
00:47:39 Angela Voorhees: I think we are called to service as human beings; consider others as better than yourselves. A life of service solves many issues
00:48:08 Anita D Crum: Love it Zachary!!! I am not your “Black Google”!
00:48:31 Lotus Buckner: Sandra, you put it in chat. At 1pm CT, I will unmute everyone and you can come on at that time but for the first hour, it is just the guests.
00:49:00 I Dominique “D” Ross, she/her: Thatā€™s an important pointā€¦if we ā€œcare to learn,ā€ weā€™ll take the responsibility on ourselves to do the research.
00:49:46 Joanne Schlosser: I started a social and racial justice book group last year so we can learn and discuss together.
00:49:47 JOHN TINDALL: Wypeepo interested in some straight talk to white people from a white person, I recommend the book ā€œWhite Fragilityā€. Hard words to hear, but good to know.
00:50:26 Joanne Schlosser: Yes, John Tindall, my book group is reading White Fragility now. very helpful
00:50:49 Angela Voorhees: I love that Rebecca! Relationships are important!
00:51:11 Sara So: At my previous company we had an optional book club discussing So You Want to Talk About Race by Ijeoma Oluo with 100s of participants that was quite popular
00:51:15 Leah Ramsey: Many of my bipoc friends and colleagues have shared how exhausted they are of being the ā€œoppression googleā€ for peopleā€¦.Like, why do we have to educate everyone about our struggle. I realized I was continually going to many of them to ask questions – I was taking their time, which wasnā€™t fair to them at all!
00:51:17 Sandra Spencer: I think sometimes people forget that just one person can truly make a difference and I loved Zachary’s statement is you are going to mess up. That is how you learn mess up apologize and have the conversation.
00:51:19 Yonae Rolle: We must be comfortable with being uncomfortable!
00:51:22 Zachary Nunn: The irony is… marginalized people have a fear of making the wrong statement or move everyday in various aspects of life.
00:51:34 Sarika Lamont: SO TRUE Zach
00:51:37 Christina Wang: Tracie dropping some truth bombs
00:51:49 Christina Wang: So true, Zach
00:52:08 JOHN TINDALL: WHEN you screw up, welcome the feedback.
00:52:27 Eric Kung: as a member of the AAPI, I find it important to remind people that it doesn’t have to be about you for you to care.
00:52:29 Sandra Spencer: I am curious as to how many churches have started having this discussion. Just like Company Values it is more than just putting a statement out on a website. You need to walk the walk and serve as an example.
00:53:36 Howard Prager: Our temple, Temple Chai, had a summer focused on it with watching movies such as The 13th and having several facilitated discussions on this very topic.
00:53:40 Christina Wang: +1 to John – feedback is a gift
00:54:14 JOHN TINDALL: Yes Christina, itā€™s a sign of trust.
00:54:47 Sarah Stephenson: Thatā€™s so terrible. šŸ™
00:55:05 Zachary Nunn: that. is. awful.
00:55:14 JOHN TINDALL: unacceptable.
00:55:19 Turquoise Peart: Thatā€™s horrible
00:55:36 Zachary Nunn: wow.
00:55:46 JOHN TINDALL: Would YOU eat in a bathroom stall????
00:55:51 JOHN TINDALL: Not me.
00:55:52 Sandra Spencer: That is why states have legislated lactation rooms. That is true in CT for many years now
00:55:58 christina caughlin: Totally can relate
00:56:04 Sandra Spencer: Sad that a law has to be created
00:56:06 Janine Dunn: CT has a law about this, and using a bathroom is not acceptable.
00:56:42 Ashley Shott: We had a “lactation room” that was an offset of the bathroom. People would try to get in there to take a nap so you would hear the handle jiggle. It was also right by the vending machines…
00:56:47 Leah Ramsey: Sarika – the solution has been a ā€œbathroom stallā€ for far too long – Iā€™m sorry you had to deal with that! We created a dedicated space and Iā€™m so proud of the women and men who listened and made the change!
00:56:50 Allison Peschel: Taking a mothers break as we speak! Thanks for saying that. Even virtually, it’s often why I’m not on camera for things like this.
00:56:56 Sarah Stephenson: As an HR professional, Iā€™ve found employers only respond to a stick – not a carrot. Legislation has to be created for all of these things to get employers to do right.
00:57:43 Joanne Schlosser: The book Caste by Isabel Wilkerson is also hard (emotionally) to read but very powerful! She talks about how the Nazi’s actually took their lessons on how to marginalize and eliminate Jews from the US and their approach to Blacks. How horrifying is that?
00:58:00 Sarika Lamont: Thank you @Leah – I agree, bathroom stalls, unacceptable! I am so proud my current organization operates on more equitable and inclusive level.
00:58:12 Sarah Stephenson: @Joanne – Another great read by her is The Warmth of Other Suns. Great read!
00:58:45 Joanne Schlosser: Thank you Sarah Stephenson
00:59:06 Niels Dale: On the flip side, ageism is the 900 lb D&I gorilla that is often overlooked….
00:59:20 Sara So: My friend Ahmad Corner started this website about micro aggression examples this summer https://www.ypmedia.co/1000-cuts
00:59:57 Christina Wang: I believe thereā€™s been research done that affirms this trend
01:00:47 Sarah Stephenson: Anger is acceptable when it comes from men but disagreement is unacceptable from women unless thereā€™s a particular dance involved with lots of fluff.
01:01:07 Sandra Spencer: Bryant University recently started a coffee break for Woman to meet and like Tracie I have often worked as a Senior Manager with predominantly white men so women supporting women is really important. So many women get so competitive instead of just lifting each other up.
01:01:26 Cheri Brenton: Enjoying this conversation. It is so sad that people cannot support each other in the workplace and lift each other up. Rather than treating others unkindly.
01:01:26 Amy Steele: This is so unfortunately true in the workplace about us women (or in same group) not helpful to one another. Growing up I hoped be able to turn to another woman and get support. I provide this for other women in and out of the workplace.
01:01:31 Leah Ramsey: Sarika – Iā€™ve had that experience SO many times. If I hear ā€œwomen are too emotionalā€ one more time! Itā€™s exhausting – yes, Iā€™m passionate, I will not dim light to make men feel more comfortable
01:01:38 Sandra Spencer: So true – Women are labeled aggressive and Men are labeled proactive
01:01:50 Amy Steele: I’ve experienced this enough and has driven me from places and companies.
01:02:14 Leah Ramsey: YES – Lotus – 100% you need to do a round-table on womenā€™s issues in the workplace
01:02:19 Sarika Lamont: YES @Leah! You don’t mind my passion when it serves you or the bottom line of the organization, but not when I want to share how I feel
01:03:00 Anita D Crum: Its the “double standard” of men and women…
01:03:19 I Dominique “D” Ross, she/her: Weā€™ve been having this conversation in the Culturally Fluent Families Facebook group
01:03:35 Amy Steele: It has been a variety of racial women In my case. šŸ™
01:03:38 Leah Ramsey: YES – @Sarika – that is such a real example. My passion is GREAT when Iā€™m creating revenue – but not when Iā€™m talking about important issues to our female employees
01:03:45 I Dominique “D” Ross, she/her: I learn so much from Madison Butler
01:04:03 Sandra Spencer: Madison Butler is a great person to follow on LinkedIn. It is a shame that she still is getting cyberbullied for speaking the truth as a Black Lesbian.
01:04:15 Zachary Nunn: agreed Sandra!
01:04:33 Joan Speicher: So true Sandra!
01:04:34 Tracie Sponenberg: Agreed. Madison Butler is terrific.
01:04:48 Sarika Lamont: oh I need to follow Madison
01:05:02 Amy Steele: Checking her out now!! šŸ™‚
01:06:03 Sarah Stephenson: YES ZACHARY!
01:06:22 Turquoise Peart: Very true!
01:06:33 Amy Steele: Yes! Thank you!
01:07:36 Mike Vaughn: @Zachary – same holds true for exec teams and corp boards. Just because you have 1, 2, or 3 does not mean policies and culture changes
01:07:43 Zachary Nunn: yup!
01:07:53 Sarika Lamont: YES @Mike agreed
01:08:15 Christina Wang: YES
01:08:27 Sarah Stephenson: I have trouble with navigating dialogues with my boss about black voices he hears on Fox that support racist systems and stereotypes and why those voices are problematic.
01:10:02 Christina Wang: That ā€œwe just hire the best candidateā€ line/response demonstrates an inherent bias that they donā€™t believe diverse candidates are capable of being the most qualified
01:10:37 Sarah Stephenson: Yes! I always say ā€œyou want 10 years of mediocrity or 2 years of excellence?!ā€
01:10:50 Lotus Buckner: Yep, Katrina is aweosme!!
01:10:55 Mike Vaughn: How many decisions would change if resumes were reviewed without names and interviews were conducted with no picture or view where you can see someone. What if????
01:11:40 Lamees Abourahma: @Mike Vaughn You mean this is not the norm right now?? šŸ™‚
01:12:00 Leah Ramsey: @Mike – I am a huge proponent of ā€œblind applicationsā€ for many positions –
01:13:30 Joanne Schlosser: Yes, Amanda Gordon, the poet was incredible!!
01:13:34 Cheri Brenton: Amanda Gorman was awesome!
01:13:35 LeNaye Willis-Lloyd: Amanda Gorman for president!
01:13:36 Mike Vaughn: @Lamees – Ha ha, maybe šŸ™‚ @Leah – I am seeing this more and more and tech is starting to accommodate this feature
01:13:40 Niels Dale: Experience requirements more often than not are skewed to those with less experience, thus excluding older applicants…. even though the job spec bullet points are so voluminous, a lesser experienced person would be challenged in doing it all.
01:13:55 Lamees Abourahma: Symphonies introduced a ā€œblack curtain auditionsā€ when conductors donā€™t see the players. This is how female players finally made their way into symphonies. Wish other industries learn from them!
01:14:10 Zachary Nunn: yup!
01:14:17 Joanne Schlosser: @Lamees that’s a great example.
01:14:20 Zachary Nunn: AMANDA GORMAN – YES!
01:14:22 Mike Vaughn: Reminds me of The Voice on NBC –
01:14:33 Amy Steele: Great example!!!
01:14:36 Leah Ramsey: Iā€™ve rewatched her poetic recital about 10 times already – each additional listen I find another, deeper meaning and I just love her absolute greatness!
01:15:00 Anita D Crum: ā€¦.and she overcame a speech impediment! Ms. Gorman is Brilliant and meant to be in this space at this time!
01:15:07 Sarika Lamont: @Leah me too! I love her, gave me chills.
01:15:13 Turquoise Peart: Yes, love her!!
01:15:17 Sarika Lamont: Oh wow I did not know that @Anita
01:15:46 Zachary Nunn: She was apparently told she had a learning disability… just imagine if we missed that talent, and how much talent we miss.
01:15:47 Joanne Schlosser: Amanda Gormon did a great interview on CBS. it’s online, only about 4 min and worth a watch
01:15:53 Zachary Nunn: How many other Amanda Gorman’s are out there
01:15:58 Leah Ramsey: @zach – the topic of Amanda Gorman took over 2 separate meetings yesterday – her biggest ā€œfan girlā€ in my company is a 66 yr old white woman from OH, who has now done extensive research on Amanda – and we LOVED it!
01:16:03 Lamees Abourahma: Great discussion everyone! The hour went by quick.
01:16:04 LeNaye Willis-Lloyd: Great job, panelist.
01:16:05 christina caughlin: loved this open discussion. thank you all
01:16:10 Julie Turney: Great conversation. To be continued
01:16:19 Angela Voorhees: Thank you all for a great hour. I canā€™t stay on past 11am due to meetings. Great conversation!
