#RealPeople #RealTalk – Virtual Roundtable: Making Unconscious Bias More Conscious

February 26, 2021 at 12:00pm CT

Unconscious bias is a real thing. A very real thing. However, it is NOT an excuse for racism, discrimination, microaggressions, or disrespect. The fact that we all have unconscious biases does not mean that is okay to be complacent about it.

We must become more conscious, more intentional. That is the only way to tackle this.

We will have some fantastic guests for this conversation including:

  • Fernando Nucum of Health Care Services Corporation
  • Mya Fisher of Global Equity Forward
  • TJ Mercer of Slalom
  • Dawn Rose of Northwestern Medicine

#RealPeople #RealTalk – Virtual Roundtable: Living and Breathing Allyship

January 22, 2021 at 12:00pm CT

We ended last year on a heavy but critically important topic. We want to start the year with a just as important topic but one that sets us up for a successfully actionable year ahead and that’s Living and Breathing Allyship.

When we think about any challenge in life, it’s a lot harder to go it alone. We need people. We need allies. We need unity. We need connection.

Join us to talk about what true allyship really looks like because it is way more than just saying you support diversity and inclusion.

We will have some fantastic guests for this conversation:

  • Zach Nunn of Living Corporate
  • Tracie Sponenberg of The Granite Group
  • Rebecca Edwards of Infinite HR of Charlotte
  • Sarika Lamont of Avantus Federal

#RealPeople #RealTalk – Virtual Roundtable: Tackling Systemic Bias

December 18, 2020 at 12:00pm CT

A Harvard study showed that Blacks and Asians received more callbacks for a job when they “whitened” their resumes, mainly by using an American-sounding name versus their full real name. Of Black candidates, 25% received callbacks from adjusting their resumes, but only 10% received callbacks if they left any ethnic details on their resume.

This is just one of many examples of how our systems are biased and why we need to tackle this issue.

We will have some fantastic guests for this conversation:

  • Jamon Harrell, MBA, SPHR, SHRM-SCP of Businessolver
  • Eric Kung of Volta Charging
  • Jay Polaki of HR Geckos
  • Katie Lopes of Johnson & Quin

Given our current environment, we couldn’t think of a better topic to end the year with than this.

#RealPeople #RealTalk – Virtual Roundtable: Overcoming the Stigma of Mental Health

November 20, 2020 at 12:00pm CT

The World Health Organization states that at some point in their lives, one in four people will be effected by mental health or neurological disorders. Nearly two-thirds of them will never seek help. Stigma plays a great role in this.

More than 40% of countries do NOT have a mental health policy, more than 30% have no mental health programs, and in over 50% of countries, there is only one psychiatrist per 100,000 people.

According to Mental Health America, suicidal ideation in adults is increasing (up to 4.19%; up 450,000 people from last year). Insurance coverage for mental health is lacking and 10.3% (4.7 million+) of adults with mental illness are uninsured. Almost 19% of adults experience a mental health illness. That’s 45 million Americans. 57.2%  of adults with a mental illness did not receive treatment. That’s 26 million people. Almost 30% of adults with a cognitive disability could not see a doctor because of the expense.

The American Psychiatric Association (APA) reported that, “People who identify as being two or more races (24.9%) are most likely to report any mental illness within the past year than any other race/ethnic group, followed by American Indian/Alaska Natives (22.7%), white (19%), and black (16.8%).”

50% to 75% of youth in our juvenile system qualify as having a mental health disorder and as we know, there is disproportionate representation of racial and ethnic minorities in our criminal justice system. The APA also reports, “people of racial and ethnic minority groups are less likely to receive mental health care,” specifically 31% of blacks and hispanics and 22% of Asians compared to 48% of whites.

The APA also reports that people who identify as LGBTQ are greater than twice as likely as heterosexual people to have a mental health disorder in their lifetime.

Among veterans who need mental health care, less than 50% actually receive it (National Council for Behavioral Health). The Veteran Association reported that 22% of veterans die per day by suicide.

These facts can be quite astounding especially when you think about how many people are having to live with mental illness without any help. We want to create awareness, improve these statistics, and break the stigma that exists around mental illness.

Join us on November 20, 2020 at 12:00pm CT to discuss how we can overcome the stigma of mental health and thus, help more people get the care they need. We’ll be joined by a great group of guests with both lived experiences as well as expertise on the topic: Dr. Joseph Novak, Psy.D. (Private Practice), Julie Sowash (Disability Solutions), Morgan Williams (ex-Uber), and Joshua Mendez (U.S. Army & Salesforce).

#RealPeople #RealTalk – Virtual Roundtable: Recruiting for Diversity & Inclusion

Friday, October 2, 2020 at 12:00pm CT

In 2014,  Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) published a study that found that both male and female managers were twice as likely to hire a man than a woman.

HBR reported that diverse companies are 70% more likely to report capturing a new market.

Business Insider states that Gen Z, our youngest generation entering the workforce, is even more diverse than millennials. When you put those two generations together, you’re looking at a highly diverse group that will soon make up a great majority of the workforce. Brookings says millennials will comprise 75% of the workforce by 2025.

That means we need to do a much better job when it comes to diversity, inclusion, equity, and belonging. On Friday, October 2, 2020 at 12:00pm CT, we’ll tackle just one part of the equation – recruiting for diversity. Where will you find diverse talent? How do you recruit for and hire the right talent that also happens to be highly diverse? What happens once they’re hired?

Join us to talk about this critical topic! We’ll be joined by four esteemed guests: Cat Colella-Graham of Cheer Partners, Candice McGlen of The Rinker Group, Rohini Shankar of Ciox Health, and Joe Marino of Hueman.

#BEHR Virtual Global Summit - Delivering Intentional Leadership in Unprecedented Times

Thursday, September 24 at 11:00am CT

In the era of COVID-19, social unrest and record natural disasters, the choice has been made for us when it comes to change – we must do it.

There’s no “best practice” that will lead you to success because we don’t live in a homogeneous world so we need to stop treating people like they are all the same. We need to customize our styles, approaches, and solutions to individuals. This seemingly impossible task is made more possible with intention.

Intentional leadership means that we appreciate and celebrate the things that make us different. It means that we purposefully build teams of people who think differently, who bring unique value to the team, and who  are unapologetically passionate about what they do. It means that we, then, lead each unique person differently in the way we recognize them, engage them, support them, or grow them.

This is authenticity. This is leading on purpose.

Join Founder and CEO, Lotus Buckner, on her birthday, September 24, for an inspiring presentation on how to deliver on intentional leadership now, and ongoing. We need this more than ever.

#RealPeople #RealTalk - Virtual Roundtable: Destroying the Glass Ceiling

Friday, September 11, 2020 at 12:00pm CT

According to Catalyst, in 2018, nearly half of the labor force is made up of women but only 40% of management positions are held by women. Additionally, only 6.2% of those women are Latinas, 3.8% of those women are black and 2.4% of those women are Asian. CNN reports that today, there are only four black CEOs among Fortune 500 companies. That’s less than one percent! AND, zero of them are women!

Only this year in June did the U.S. Supreme Court rule that the Civil Rights Act of 1964 protects employees from discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. Before this, 28 of our 50 states had zero protection for this! Only 0.3% of Fortune 500 board directors were openly LGBTQIA in 2020.

These are all pretty alarming! Let’s change this story! Join us on Friday, September 11, 2020 at 12:00pm CT for a virtual roundtable on Destroying the Glass Ceiling. We’ll be joined by individuals who are doing just that:

We’ll talk about how they got there and what barriers we still need to destroy to make way for more diverse leadership of our organizations.
